What to do with old skates

Have a pair of skates that wouldn’t be used again? Here are your options to make sure they wouldn’t go to waste!

Donate:

You can donate your skates to Skate to Great or Comrie’s Sports Equipment Bank.

Skate to Great collects used skates and gives them to charities, schools and community programs all over the country. Skates can be dropped off for donation at Storage Mart and Play It Again during their business hours. Skates dropped off at Play It Again are also eligible to receive a tax receipt.

Comrie’s Sports Equipment Bank is a newly started organization that collects used equipment for kids in Southern Alberta. Individual kids/families that qualify for fee assistance can schedule an appointment to outfit their youngster in gear for free. To make a donation email comriessportsequipmentbank@gmail.com.

Sell/Consign:

If you want to sell or consign skates and get some money to set aside for a new pair there are many options.

If you buy junior skates at Sportchek you can bring the skates back within 2 years to receive a credit.

Skates can be consigned/sold at Play it Again Sports, 2nd Chance Sports and children’s skates can be consigned at most kids clothing and toy consignment stores as well. Higher end skates can be consigned at Professional Skate.

If you are part of a hockey or figure skating club, clubs usually have their own equipment sales where old skates can be sold.

Southern Alberta Skating Swap/Buy is a Facebook group for selling/trading used skates.

If you have time on your hands you can also sell skates on Kijiji.

Quickly Get Rid of:

Want to get rid of your skates as fast as you can without any work?

Drop off your skates at Value Village or Goodwill where they will be sold for a cheap price.

Post your skates on Calgary’s Freecycle network https://groups.freecycle.org/group/Calgary/posts/all
